Tips For A Better Veggie Garden

Picking the Ideal Spot

What a garden needs…

  • day-long sun (at least 6-8 hours)
  • good drainage
  • protection from the cold wind

If you choose the right environment for you plants, they will grow healthy & strong. If you see that a plant isn’t happy in one place, try moving it to another. Every yard is different and what works in one, doesn’t necessarily work in another. Try to stay away from tree, their nutritional needs are different than your average fruit or veggie plant. If you can manage to plan your garden close to the kitchen or the back door you will probably take better care of your garden because you won’t have far to walk and you won’t forget to water it. You’ll spend more time in a garden that is conveniently located and recognize a problem as soon as you see it.

Simply Put

Putting your tallest plants on the north side of the garden will insure that they won’t block the sun so that your smaller plants can get the sun they need.

The easier you make your frequently harvested crops to get to the more likely you are to harvest & use them. Put them towards the front so you won’t have to go trampling through the garden bed to get to them. The garden doesn’t like compacted dirt, so tread lightly and give yourself a landing pad that you can step on instead.

Companion Planting

Families like to hang out together. By planting veggie families together you will yield better crops & it will make it easier for crop rotation in the coming years..

  • Legumes: peas, beans, limas
  • brassicas: cabbage, kale, broccoli, collards, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts
  • cucurbits: cucumber, melon, squash
  • nightshade: peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant
  • root veggies: beets, carrots, turnips, parsnips radishes, onions, garlic
  • corn
  • leafy greens: spinach, chard, lettuce

Planting Methods

  • Vertical cropping: Train sprawling plant to grow up. Cucumbers, squash, tomatoes & melons.
  • Intercropping: Planting quick-maturing veggies such as lettuce & spinach between widely spaced rows of a slow-maturing crop like tomatoes or growing squash with corn.
  • Succession planting: Making a second planting like putting in beans where you just harvested early spinach. Just make sure you add some compost or fertilizer before you replant.

Saving Space Means Saving Time

Trying different methods other than the more traditional veggie rows may yield larger harvests with less work.

Wide Rows

You may want to broadcast your seeds, letting the plants grow closer together. To do this just rack a section of the of the garden. Then scatter your seeds within the width of the raked section. This will allow you to…

  • plant more quickly
  • weed less because plants will crowd them out
  • save on watering because the plants will keep the ground shaded & moist.
  • grow cool-weather plants like spinach & lettuce in hotter months without bolting.
  • grow more produce in less space
  • extend your harvest period

I wouldn’t recommend this method for potatoes, tomatoes, corn, melons, squash or cucumbers.

Raised Beds

For this system of gardening you will plant your  veggies close together on beds that are 10 inches or more wide and are built up 6-10 inches above the ground. Beds are separated by walkways for easy pickin’. People who use this method of gardening claim that they get higher yields, up to 4 times more veggies per acre!

Other advantages?…

  • improved drainage
  • warmer, drier soil for earlier spring planting
  • little to no room for weeds
  • plants will shade the soil keeping it moist
  • you won’t have to worry about trending on the soil so it doesn’t get compacted
  • no deep digging
  • you can form beds a month or two before the actual planting

Disadvantages…

There are 2 big disadvantages to this method of gardening.

  • the beds dry out faster
  • paths between the beds become overrun with weeds.

To combat these issues you can use a heavy mulch of dried leaves or hay. When you see weeds popping up or dry patches in your beds, just add more mulch.

Be creative with your planting. Look around to see what you can recycle into a planter or what you can use to make raised beds. I have used baskets, pails, coffee containers, old wheel barrels or a bicycle with a basket in front…the possibilities are endless. I’ve even used my banana tree trunks as planters!

Square It Up

4×4 sections with paths in between will make it easy to calculate your layout & get to your produce once it’s time to harvest. Read your seed packets to find out how much room each plant needs, then in your 4×4 planting space proceed to space them accordingly. Again, get creative, by adding a vertical vines in the center, surrounded by root crops.

The advantages?…

  • no compacted soil
  • get more harvest from less space
  • less weeding, watering & compost
  • no overplanting
  • looks cleaner & neater
  • no having to thin out
  • easier to plan crop rotation

The only disadvantage I see are that you may have to do more preparation of the beds at first and you may have slower planting in the spring.

That’s it for this month…

***Stay tuned, because my next garden post will be about: Landscaping: walkways, lawn & trees & edging. Also, flower & herb gardening. Until then…

HAPPY GARDENING!!

Diabetic Treat: Sinfully Good

Okay, I’m about to drop a bomb on all my diabetic peeps!! My dad was a diabetic and one of the things he used to crave the most was sweets. Which was kinda funny, since, he never really ate sweets before he was diagnosed. But, anyway, for some reason he was REALLY craving them. So, being the awesome daughter that I am, I did some research on how to naturally quench his craving for sweets.

There are many different ways for diabetics to curb their desire for sweets, but here’s one that tastes truly sinful…DATES! Dates are sooooo sweet and you would think that they would be at the top on the no-no list for diabetic. But… let me break it down for ya….

Dates are:

  • Easily digested
  • High in fiber
  • Prevent LDL cholesterol absorbtion
  • High in iron, potassium, B-vitamins, vitamins A & K, copper, manganese, magnesium & niacin
  • They have a low glycemic index
  • Increase energy
  • Fat Free
  • Have a ton of antioxidants

So, here’s the thing. Each person is different, what works for one person, may not necessarily work for another. I know that some foods that were supposed to be good for diabetics, weren’t good for my dad. I would suggest that you start small, like, maybe, one date. See how you feel, if you don’t have a reaction, then, next time eat 2 dates.

I would like to point out also, that dates, should only be consumed as a snack, it’s not a meal replacement. That goes for anyone, not just those with diabetes. Dates are such a powerhouse of nutrients that only need to eat 3 or 4 of them to get their benefits.

Here are the ones I get from the regular grocery store:

IMG_20170526_105427761

Here is an excellent recipe to curb your “candy” craving. It actually taste a lot like brownies 😀

IMG_20170526_100632119
Chop up about 3 or 4 dates and put in a small food processor

ADD IN 1 Tablespoon each….

IMG_20170526_100939661

IMG_20170526_101154944
2 T. Almond meal
IMG_20170526_101253935
Cocoa powder
IMG_20170526_101307394
Ground flax seeds *Flax seeds are much easier to digest when ground. Don’t buy them already ground, they loose their potency. Freshly grind them to get the most benefit. *The processor won’t grind them, you will need a coffee grinder.
IMG_20170526_102522
Sesame seeds

process in food processor…

IMG_20170526_101733792
Add in 2 or 3 drops of flavoring. I love the combination of orange & chocolate so I add wild orange. Peppermint may be good too. I have never tried it.

process again until a ball forms

IMG_20170526_101846548

remove from processor and shape into balls or whatever shape you like. Top with a little orange zest and enjoy!! So YUMMY 😀

IMG_20170526_102430492

***If your “batter” comes out too thin, just add more almond meal. If it’s too thick add a tiny bit of water. Mine sometimes come out very sticky, but I don’t mind. If you don’t like the stickiness you can roll them in some cocoa powder or almond meal.

Thank you for stopping by 😀

With Love,

Sindy <3

New Moon Report May 25

This new moon is a Super New Moon and will have everything to do with thinking and lower mind. This Moon phase is in Gemini, which is perfect for new beginnings, however , the key will be to keep your thoughts organized.

As you prepare for your new moon intentions it should be important to understand the energy that this particular New Moon will bring. There are no major aspects to the Moon right now so this is a pure energy, full of thoughts, and these thoughts can get the better if you. Remember that our thoughts are not our own they come from various outside influences and can cause you to pause unnecessarily. Thoughts are like a movie in our minds. We can speculate and anticipate how the ending will be, but, you will never know for sure what the true ending is until it happens.

Gemini New Moon wants to remind you that your thoughts are forever changing and you are not defined by them. They can be damaging or rejuvenating. I recently read something that really resonated “people do not cause you pain your thoughts do”.

Tonight as you meditate and set intentions for the this Moon Cycle, try to stay aware of your thoughts. The more positive and compassionate your thoughts are, the lighter and happier you will feel and project to the World.

Apartment Composting

When I was growing up, my family compost pile was a mound of stinking black earth decorated with vegetable peelings, nutshells, and denuded, forgotten apple cores. Teeming with worms and other wriggling digesters, the pile took six months or more to transform our jettisoned detritus into the fragrant loam my mother would later scatter at the base of her peonies.

The pile was not something that could ever work in an apartment.

But not all composts are created equally, and if you have ever rejected composting because of a less-than-spacious abode, think again. Today’s composters are streamlined and odor-free, offering options to accommodate even the smallest of apartments. Is it time for you to get on the composting bandwagon?

The Benefits of Composting

While you may not have peonies demanding a steady diet of nutrient-rich fertilizer, composting has other benefits. Not only can apartment dwellers use that black gold to feed house plants and patio containers, you can also reduce household waste and save yourself a trip to the dumpster.

Food scraps
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, food is the biggest ingredient in American trash. Currently more than 35% of the average garbage can is filled with kitchen scraps—scraps that could be diverted from the landfill altogether.

And diverting those scraps is important. When tossed into landfills, organic waste generates methane gas, something that doesn’t happen when you compost. Methane is a harmful greenhouse gas that increases the rate of global climate change. In fact, municipalities like Seattle, San Franciso, and New York City operate curbside collection and composting programs and get a carbon credit for their efforts. Despite this, about 95% of food scraps in the US are still thrown away.

To help reduce emissions and divert your share of organic waste, apartment composting is the answer. Luckily, there are several great ways to compost in an apartment. The type you choose will depend on your situation.

HoneyColony Superior CBD Hemp Oil

Cannabidiol is extracted from the hemp plant and has no euphoric properties whatsoever. This formulation offers all the health benefits of hemp oil without the feeling of being “high.”

Superior hemp oil nourishes the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), a group of endogenous cannabinoid receptors located in the brain and throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems. A decrease in the functioning of the ECS can lead to chemical imbalances throughout the whole body. Our hemp oil acts on the ECS to increase its function and promote total body health.

In addition to faster absorption, our special formulation synergizes hemp oil with other medicinal herbs used in ancient medicine. This is a potent concentration inside of a small travel size bottle.

No other product in the marketplace uses this finely extracted, optimized cannabinoid matrix, using production that meet high end specifications, using only natural ingredients in its processing. Integrity is key.

Key Ingredients & Why Superior Hemp Oil Works:

Western medicine likes to synthesize and compartmentalize compounds. But the phyto-nutrients contained in whole plants are complex and complete. While identifying active principles is a useful research tool, evidence supports the superior therapeutic value of the naturally-occurring synergistic chemistry of the whole plant. In other words, whole plants or mixtures of plants are more effecteive than than isolated compounds. It’s about treating your health as a whole.

With the assistance of HERBOLOGIE’s master formulator and a veritable  alchemical magician,  we have actively mixed, tested, and finally formulating a recipe that looks to traditional medicine such as the ancient Chinese and the bees  Superior Hemp Oil‘s profile aims to enhance, regulate and support a long healthy life.

Sustainable Organic World: Soap Nuts

Hand-Sort Select Soap Nuts

Sun-dried, De-seeded Soap Berries

USDA Certified Organic

I had never heard of soap nuts before, also known as soap berries, until I saw them on Pinterest. I was intrigued because I am always looking for green, organic, sustainable products to use in my home. So I found them on Amazon by a company called “NaturOli” and decided to try them out.

bag

Before I tell you how they worked, let me give you a little soap nut background. Soap Nuts (Soap Berries) are a gift from Mother Nature, a sustainable, natural resource that grows wild from the sapindus trees. The fruit is picked & dried and it’s the dried fruit that produces the “soap” (saponin). Making it the ultimate 100% natural laundry detergent and cleanser!

nuts

Now let me tell you how they worked. They come with a little pouch that you put 4 or 5 nuts into. Then, because I use cold water to wash my clothes, they recommended to soak them in hot water before using them. So, while I gathered up my clothes I soaked them. It only took a few minutes and they were ready to use.

pouch

I poured the soap nut pouch in along with the soaking water, then, added in my clothes and let ‘er rip. That’s it, nothing else was added, when they were finished, I put everything in the dryer, including the pouch. They came out fresh & cleaned!! I used my initial 4 berries for 7 washes before I had to change them out 😀

I should say at this point that my laundry isn’t very soiled. I don’t do construction, lawn maintenance or anything that would be considered “dirty” work. I do, however, work in the garden and perspire. They are effective in removing soil and odors while leaving my clothes feeling soft. I even used them to wash my sheets & towels. The towels are very soft, while still being absorbent. Bathroom towels that aren’t absorbent is something I used to dislike about synthetic fabric softener.

The soap nuts were so gentle, they are superb for delicate fabrics. If you have allergies or are sensitive to commercial chemicals & fragrances and want to do your part to help create a sustainable, organic world, then soap nuts are the answer!

  • Hypoallergenic, fragrance free, Eco-friendly and biodegradalbe
  • Low sudsing – perfect for high efficiency (he) washers
  • Free of synthetic chemicals, fillers, toxins, dyes and perfumes
  • Ideal for cloth cotton diaper landering
  • Imported only from Fair Trade, Co-op suppliers
  • NaturOli Soap Nuts are cleaned, sorted & packaged in the USA

NaturOli Soap nuts are the highest grade quality. Only premium soap berries are harvested at the their optimal time to ensure maximum saponin content. They are then de-seeded by hand.

Along with my NaturOli Soap Nut purchase I was given a sample of “Extreme 18X” concentrate soap. I use it in my mop water to mop my tile floor and it works perfectly!! But, there are a plethora of green, cleaning uses – both household and personal care. Inherently healthy and nourishing properties will leave skin conditioned too. You can throw away those rubber gloves! Experiment and adjust amounts used depending upon your desired results.
