EYE CONTACT

How often do we look into the eyes of the people around us? Next time you are out and about, notice how often you actually look people in the eye. I recently spent the day focusing  how I interacted with the people around me and noticed that eye contact rarely happens. Most of us go through our day without really looking at the people around us. We have a bad habit of doing what we need to do without any real connection to the people around us. Another thing I noticed was that people get uncomfortable when you look them directly in the eye. We have become a society that is not used to being noticed, not used to being looked in the eye, so much so that when we are, we almost feel violated.

Looking into the eyes of the people around us connects our souls to one another. It gives us a connection that binds us together. We can tell so much about other people when we look them in the eye. By looking people in the eye we can tell if they are happy, sad, mad or shy. We should be careful how long we look people in the eye, because the longer we look someone in the eyes the more uncomfortable it is, that even goes for the people we are closest to in our lives. Stare into the eyes of your partner and see what happens, they will think you lost your mind. I’m not saying that we should go out and start staring people down. Looking someone in the eye is a very personal thing, but, if done correctly, by taking a few seconds to look directly into someone eyes,  it can make them feel noticed and appreciated.

In business, looking people in the eye can get you noticed and may even get you the job you want, the promotion you’ve been looking for or even a raise. By paying attention to the people around us we can make them feel like they matter and that what they have to say is important to us, it can make us look like we know what we are doing, that we are confident in our selves and our abilities. Looking people directly in the eye is a way of showing others that we see them and that they have our undivided attention.

What everyone in this world wants is to be noticed, to know that they matter and that they are not alone. And our most important purpose in life is to show people they are valued. There is no better way to get that message across than to look others in the eye and acknowledge them. The next time you are at the grocery store or a restaurant or walking down the hall in a hotel, notice the people that you come in contact with. Actually take a second to look into the eyes of the cashier, waitress, or cleaning person. Be grateful that these people are there serving, and realize that without these people we wouldn’t be able to get through our day.

We have an obligation to our society to connect to the people around us. Without that connection we can feel like we are separate from everyone and that what we do doesn’t matter. But the truth is that each one of us is important and each one of us affects more people than we realize. If all it takes is a few seconds out of our day to stop and look into the eyes of the people we come in contact with on a daily bases to make a better world why wouldn’t we do it? Could you imagine what a beautiful world it would be if we all connected with one another and made people feel loved, wanted and important. It can happen and it all starts with you!
